Fooling the Eye

In architecture, the term Trompe l’Oeil (meaning “fool the eye”) is a way of replicating real elements of scale to create the illusion of reality. This selection of Crown and Frieze bordering fulfills that promise. Each design is masterfully hand painted on finely woven gessoed canvas. Finished borders are shipped trimmed and ready to apply in the same manner as fine wallpaper. All designs are most convincing in grisaille (shades of gray), or may be custom colored by specification.

Actual crown molding can often be greatly enhanced by placing a trompe l’oeil border beneath it. But painted frieze and crown designs most famously stand on their own to create the illusion of three dimensional crown molding creating a fun sensation of “fooling the eye.”

The borders are priced by the linear foot in accordance with their detail and complexity. They are designed by Ruthann Olsson and created exclusively in the Interior Arts studio, in Norfolk, CT.

Two additional Decorative Designs are offered on paper or canvas in the colors shown, but may be custom colored by specification. The borders are sent trimmed, and ready to apply in the same manner as fine wallpaper.
